Is it a good photo?

Many will look at Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic image of the sailor kissing the pretty nurse and immediately conclude that it is a good photograph. While this may be true, there are many technical aspects to why this image has become a classic. Technically speaking, in black and white form, there is a great sense of value. We find dark blacks in the suit and pure whites in the sailor’s hat as well as the sailor in the background. Although the two interacting figures are placed almost directly in the center, it works because of the arching form into the right side of the image. The woman falls on a successful diagonal. Not only is it technically well captured but also the content is great. It is interesting to know this wasn’t a planned picture, and one of the greatest things about photography is the ability to capture a moment. This photo captures two people’s intense feelings towards each other as well as providing the happy reactions of onlookers in the back. There’s nothing wrong with a simple, sweet photograph being declared as a good one.

Joel Peter Witkin: Las Meninas

Joel Peter Witkin, who is famous for his disturbing reinterpretation of historical works, once again can be seen in his distortion of a familiar image such as Las Meninas. In his interpretation it seems he is destroying beauty and creating the opposite. He deconstructs the iconic elements that were part of the original piece. He took away the maids of honor creating more of a focus on the girl in the center. It seems through this piece Joel-Peter aims to create an uncomfortable feel. The image ties together history with more modern disturbances. The added figure in the back aids to this creepy feel.

Description Of Walking on Egg Shells

In Sandy Skoglun’s, Walking on Egg Shells, the image takes place in a large bathroom setting, characterized by muted, somewhat skin tone colors. The color matches the two unclothed figures, which the viewer sees from the back, both obviously females and in a stepping position. Although easily identified as a bathroom, there is nothing typically about the location. The floor is made out of hundreds of brown eggshells. Footprints from the two figures can be seen in the form of broken eggshells creating a path. The toilet, sink and bathtub are spaced far apart from one another. Rather than the typically smooth surface of bathroom decor, these objects are covered in a rough, bumpy texture. The walls are covered in numerous, detailed, square, black images. Nine dark snakes are spread among the floor with a few pairs interacting. In most cases, where there are not two snakes interacting, a rabbit is placed.

Valerio Lecture

Wellll went to the Valerio lecture the other day here are of some of the key points I learned about this photographer:

*He didn't start off doing his own work, more commercial. He worked as a fashion photographer for 15 years.
*He then realized he didn't want that lifestyle anymore, it was stifling his personal creativity.
*He realized this when he saw a girl that he needed to shoot, he describe how he gets really shy and literally can't speak when he sees an individual he must take a picture of.
*"I have to take a picture of this girl, I die if I don't."
*He photographed this girl each year at the same time.
*He spoke on the process of documenting a murdering case and creating a book and the struggles that went into the whole process.
*He explained how he had the idea of a book within a book and intertwined photos from the murder case with his own personal photos of other subjects.
*I thought it was interesting how he heard that if you sell 500 photo books it is considered a success. He printed exactly 500.
*His process involves simply going out and seeking interesting subjects.
*His work involves a lot of powerful colors.

Overall, it was an interesting lecture and cool to hear his process of his work.

ART AND COPY

Well....just finished watching art and copy. It was really interesting, actually. (contrary to the last film watched :) ) Obviously a film about advertising. It was interesting to hear from so many different influential artists of our time. I think it is interesting how these people really are influential but yet are unknown. I knew nothing about them till this video, but they impacted the way we do things and the way we see things. It is interesting to hear the stories behind such familiar advertising, such as got milk and i love NY. You don’t necessarily think of the creator when you see these, it just is a well known thing. I enjoyed hearing where these people came from, what drove them and how far they came. They all seemed to desire to make their advertising revolutionary. This made me think about those things in a different way. I feel this documentary was laid out really well and it was easy to follow.

Anyways that’s it for now! Thanks for a great semester! See ya around! :)

Swan in the Water: Justin Nozuka

My father tried to save me, he said believe
In the spirit of God, leave me alone
My mother tried to heal me, she said just feel me
Just feel me then leave me alone

My brother tried to scold me, he tried to hold me
To mold me then leave me alone
My sister tried to listen, but she couldn't understand
It's not how I stand but where I stand

And you talk and you talk and you talk
And then you walk
And you get what you wanted all along
And then you walk

And then you walk, oil in the water
How come you can't be with me?
Oil in the fire, I remember how it used to be
Swan in the water, you're moving so elegantly

And it burns and it burns and it burns
And it burns and it burns

I know World War III tried to convince me, you were shouting
On the radio and TV screen, leave me alone
My angels tried to mess me, constantly test me
And test me and now leave me alone

The devil tried to bless me, confessing the death
And then leave me alone
My sister tried to listen, but she couldn't understand
It's not how I stand, but where I stand

And you talk and you talk and you talk
And then you walk
And you get what you wanted all along
And then you walk

And then you walk, oil in the water
How come you can't be with me?
Oil in the fire, I remember how it used to be
Swan in the water, you're moving so elegantly

And it burns and it burns and it burns

This world is trying to break me
It's trying to break me
This world is trying to break me
It's trying to break me

The world is trying to break me
It's trying to break me

The world is trying to break me
Trying to break me
This world is trying to break me
It's trying to break me

This world is trying to break me
Ooh, it's trying to break me
Ooh, it's trying to break me

Loving You Tonight: Andrew Allen

Lost, In the day, In a way
Its the same as the one before this
and i wish, I could say
that its all black and white
But its gray, Its the same, its the same
And i'm so tired but you are what im comin home to

Oh im thinkin' 'bout red wine, birds and takin' it easy
and i got you in my arms, Takin' a break from crazy

And I'll say hey
You'll say baby, Hows your day
I'll say crazy
But its all gonna be alright
You'll kiss my smile
I'll pull you closer
Spend awhile just gettin' to know ya
But its all gonna be alright, Loving you tonight
Loving you tonight

And you are there
On my heart, at the start
of my my every morning
and i cant deny, by the end of the day
that im runnin' on empty
But you make it full, Steal my breathe
Your so unpredictable,
Thats what i'm comin home to

Oh i'm dreamin bout romance , slow dancin with you
When i got you in my arms, Then i don't care what we do

And I'll say hey
You'll say baby, Hows your day
I'll say crazy
But its all gonna be alright
You'll kiss my smile
I'll pull you closer
Spend awhile just gettin' to know ya
But its all gonna be alright, Loving you tonight
Loving you tonight

Cause' everyday is just the in between
the hours separating you from me
i know you'll be waiting, I know you'll be waiting

And I'll say hey
You'll say baby, Hows your day
I'll say crazy
But its all gonna be alright
You'll kiss my smile
I'll pull you closer
Spend awhile just gettin' to know ya
But its all gonna be alright, Loving you tonight
Loving you tonight, Loving you tonight,
Loving you tonight, Loving you tonight.

soo i watched the order

WHAT IS GOING ON? So the order was pretty weird. I’m not sure if it was suppose to have sound, but it didn’t on my computer. I watched a lot of this before in other art classes, and I'm still confused of the purpose of the video. It seemed to have some sort of fascination with women and different colors. It also has some sort of seeking conflict where the pink thing is after the lady with the glass legs and when they meet she they morph into some cheetah thing that she the pink thing continues to seek after. It must have some purpose because it seems very planned out and having different levels to it......but its just really weird.

Someone Like You: Adele

I heard that you're settled down,
That you found a girl and you're married now,
I heard that your dreams came true,
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you,
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light,

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it,
I had hoped you'd see my face,
And that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over,

Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah,

You know how the time flies,
Only yesterday was the time of our lives,
We were born and raised in a summer haze,
Bound by the surprise of our glory days,

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it,
I had hoped you'd see my face,
And that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over,

Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"

Nothing compares,
No worries or cares,
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made,
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"

Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead.

Chances Are: Garrett Hedlund

Miss my grandpa's old Gibson, and a girl of no importance,
A shot of whiskey sitting on the bar.
Yeah, I used to give a damn; I used to try real hard.
But I'll give in tonight, chances are.

Chorus
One foot on the narrow way, and one foot on the ledge.
Sifting through the devil's lies, and what the good Book says.
If I'm going anywhere, I'll probably go too far.
And probably away from you, chances are.
Chances are.

Well, there's a lonely corner waiting; deuces left for playing.
And I'll tell her everything she wants to hear.
Well I'm not worth the love that's making, I'm better at the breaking.
A guy like me knows how to disappear.

Chorus
One foot on the narrow way, and one foot on the ledge.
Sifting through the devil's lies, and what the good Book says.
If I'm going anywhere, I'll probably go too far.
And probably away from you, chances are.
Chances are.

Hold you like I mean it. Say it 'til you believe it.
And we'll see if we can fill an empty heart.
But I won't tell you what the chances are.

Chorus
One foot on the narrow way, and one foot on the ledge.
Sifting through the devil's lies, and what the good Book says.
If I'm going anywhere, I'll probably go too far.
And probably away from you, chances are.
Chances are.

Timing is Everything: Garrett Hedlund

when the stars line up
and you catch a good break
and people think your lucky
but you know it’s grace
it can happen so fast
or a little bit late
timing is everything

you know i’ve had close calls
when it could have been me
i was young when i learned just
how fragile life could be
i lost friends of mine
i guess it wasn’t my time
time is everything

and i could have been a child that got took home
and i would have been one more unfinished song
and when it seems a rhyme is hard to find
that’s when one comes along
just in time

when i remember that day
when our eyes first meet
you ran into the building to get out of the rain
cuz’ you were soaking wet
and as i held the door
you wanted to know my name
timing is everything

and i could have been another minute late
and you never would have crossed my path that day
and when it seems true love is hard to find
that’s when love comes along
just in time

well you can call it fate
or destiny
sometimes it really
seems like
it’s a mystery
cause you can be hurt by love
or healed by the same
timing is everything
and it can happen so fast
or a little bit late
timing is everything

Jessie J- Who You Are

I stare at my reflection in the mirror...
Why am I doing this to myself?
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me on the shelf ...
"no,no, no, no..."

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are
(Who you are)x11

Brushing my hair, do I look perfect?
I forgot what to do to fit the mould , yeah!
The more I try the less it's working yeah yeah yeah
Cause everything inside me screams, "no,no,no,no..."

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay

Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
But tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
There's nothing wrong with who you are!

Yes, no, egos
Fake shows like woah
Just go, and leave me alone
Real talk real life
Good love goodnight
With a smile that's my home
That's my home

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are
Who you are

Love is Hard: James Morrison

I see lovers in the streets
Walking without a care
They wear it out loud
Like theres something in the air
Oh well, I dont care

Theyre treading lightly
No, they dont sink in
Theres no tracks to follow
They dont care where theyre going

And if theyre lucky, yeah
Theyll, theyll get to see
And if theyre really, really lucky
Theyll get to feel

And it kicks so hard, it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, it hits your soul
Tears your skin, and makes your blood flow
It?s better that you know that love is hard

Love takes hostages
And gives them pain
Gives someone the power
To hurt you again and again
Oh, but they don?t care

Oh, and if theyre lucky, yeah
Theyll, theyll get to see
And if theyre really, really lucky
Theyll, theyll get to feel

And if theyre, theyre truly blessed
Then theyll get to believe
And if youre damned
Youll never let yourself be deceived

And it kicks so hard, it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, it hits your soul
Tears your skin, and makes your blood flow
It?s better that we know that love is hard

It kicks so hard, it breaks your bones
Cuts so deep, it hits your soul
Tears your skin, and makes your blood flow
It?s better that we know

It kicks so hard, it breaks your bones
It cuts so deep, it hits your soul
Tears your skin, and makes your blood flow
It?s better that we know that love is hard
Love is hard, love is hard
If it was easy it wouldn?t mean nothing, no

details in the fabric: jason mraz

Calm down
Deep breaths
And get yourself dressed instead
Of running around
And pulling on your threads
And breaking yourself up

If it's a broken part, replace it
If it's a broken arm, then brace it
If it's a broken heart, then face it

And hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything will be fine

Hang on
Help is on the way
And stay strong
I'm doing everything

Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way
Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything, everything will be fine
Everything

Are the details in the fabric
Are the things that make you panic
Are your thoughts results of static cling?

Are the things that make you blow
Hell, no reason, go on and scream
If you're shocked it's just the fault
Of faulty manufacturing.

Everything will be fine
Everything in no time at all
Everything

Hold your own
And know your name
And go your own way

Are the details in the fabric (Hold your own, know your name)
Are the things that make you panic
Are your thoughts results of static cling? (Go your own way)

Are the details in the fabric (Hold your own, know your name)
Are the things that make you panic (Go your own way)
Is it Mother Nature's sewing machine?

Are the things that make you blow (Hold your own, know your name)
Hell no reason go on and scream
If you're shocked it's just the fault (Go your own way)
Of faulty manufacturing

Everything will be fine
Everything in no time at all
Hearts will hold

settlin: sugarland

Fifteen minutes left to throw me together
For Mr. Right Now, not Mr. Forever
Don't know why I even try when I know how it ends
Lookin' like another, "Maybe we can be friends."
I've been leaving it up to fate
It's my life so it's mine to make

Chorus:
I ain't settlin'
For just getting by
I've had enough so-so
For the rest of my life
Tired of shooting too low
So raise the bar high
"Just enough," ain't enough this time
I ain't settlin' for anything less than everything

With some good red wine
And my brand new shoes
Gonna dance a blue streak around my living room
Take a chance on love, and try how it feels
With my heart wide open
Yeah, you know I will
Find what it means to be the girl
Who changed her mind
And changed the world

Repeat chorus

I ain't settlin'
For just getting by
I've had enough so-so
For the rest of my life
Tired of shooting too low
So raise the bar high
"Just enough," ain't enough this time

I ain't settlin'
For just getting by
I've had enough so-so
For the rest of my life
Tired of shooting too low
So raise the bar high

I ain't settlin'
No, no, no, no, no, no
So raise the bar high, high

Identity

What is identity?

Identity is simply who we are, the satisfaction of understanding the point of our existence. Understanding identity means passing the fear of becoming nothing. It is distinction. That desire for someone to notice something different in you. Identity is the understanding of self, impressing ones mark through a situation on anothers life. Identity is the difference between ones self and anothers.

Identity is the demonstration of a person not being a replica. But as the article stated true identity is not satisfying. If you are completely a different individual you are lacking the similarity and connections with others.

Isn’t our identity mixing with others?
Can we identify with something while someone else feels that is there same identity as well?
Is identity determined by religion? Location? Successes? Or is it whichever is most important in our mind identifies us?
Who determines identity who decides if you have fully reached yours? Is it you? Is it God? Is it others?
Is identity established by knowing truth?
Is identity a continuous process or is it a destination that is possible to reach during our lifetime?

Identity is discovering who you are and creating your world and opportunities based upon that. There is fear that one might end his day in a world one never made but rather inherited. Identity is discovering who you personally are. I think it is a continuos journey, mainly surrounded around finding the truths in this world. I know my identity is the truth I believe as a Christian but that is the bulk of it. Tastes and interests play a role in it as well. In the end identity is a combination of many things but I think largely pointing towards this journey of truth.

Interesting quotes to think about:

“He is suggesting that unless one finds something common to all men at all
times, not just to one man once, one cannot die satisfied”

“the tension between an effort to achieve self-creation by the recognition of contingency and an effort to achieve universality by the transcendence of contingency”

“The drama of an individual human life, or of the history of humanity as
a whole, is not one in which a pre-existent goal is triumphantly reached or
tragically not reached.”

“once we give up, as Kant did, on the idea that scientific knowledge of hard facts is our point of contact with a power not ourselves, it is natural to do what Kant did: to
turn inward, to find that point of contact in our moral consciousness in our search for righteousness rather than our search for truth.

Collide: Kid Rock ft. Sheryl Crow

You're no angel, I'm no saint, if we were
We wouldn't be in this place tonight

Lost and lonely, scared and confused
We both have a past, nothing to lose, tonight
Well it cuts like a knife these bad luck blues
We both got scars from the hell we been thru
Somebody's gotta win, somebody's gotta lose
So let's roll the dice, one more time
Take a chance on love again tonight
Risk it all, lay it on the line
Let the skeletons fight for life
Tonight, hold on tight, as we collide

Reconnected, feelin' no pain
Seeking shelter like a spark in the rain, tonight (ooh yeah)
Worn and weathered, scared to go home
We're here together, but still all alone, tonight (uh uh yeah)
And there's no need to lie, we've both been abused
The love and the pain, the cocaine and booze, now
Most people don't, but some people do

So let's roll the dice, one more time
Take a chance on love again tonight
Risk it all, lay it on the line
Let the skeletons fight for life
Tonight, hold on tight, as we collide

Visual Response to Persona

I Love College: Asher Roth

This isn't a new song i just discovered like all the other posts, but we talked about this one in class so i had to put it up :)

I'm nice right now, man
I-I feel good
If you have a drink
Would you please put it in the air?

That party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it
I danced my ass off and had this one girl completely naked
Drink my beer and smoke my weed but my good friends is all I need
Pass out at 3, wake up at 10, go out to eat then do it again
Man, I love college

I wanna go to college for the rest of my life
Sip Banker's Club and drink Miller Lite
On Thirsty Thursday and Tuesday Night Ice
And I can get pizza a dollar a slice

So fill up my cup, let's get fucked up
I'm next on the table, who want what?
I am champion at beer pong
Allen Iverson, Hakeem Olajuwon

Don't even bounce, not in my house
Better hope you make it otherwise you naked
Time isn't wasted when you're getting wasted
Woke up today and all I could say is

Um, that party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it
I danced my ass off and had this one girl completely naked
Drink my beer and smoke my weed but my good friends is all I need
Pass out at 3, wake up at 10, go out to eat then do it again

Man, I love college, ay!
And I love drinking, ay!
I love women, ay!
Man, I love college

I can't tell you what I learned from school but
I could tell you a story or two, um
Yeah, of course I learned some rules
Like don't pass out with your shoes on
(Get the Sharpie!)

And don't leave the house 'til the booze gone
(No, we're not leaving)
And don't have sex if she's too gone
When it comes to condoms put two on
(Trust me)
Then tomorrow night find a new jawn

Hold the beer bong, nothing wrong with some fun
(Here, hold this)
Even if we did get a little bit too drunk
Time isn't wasted when you're getting wasted
Woke up today and all I could say is

That party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it
(I wish we taped)
I danced my ass off and had this one girl completely naked
Drink my beer and smoke my weed but my good friends is all I need
Pass out at 3, wake up at 10, go out to eat then do it again

Man, I love college, ay!
I love drinking, ay!
I love women, ay!
I love college

Now if everybody would please
Put their drink as high as they can
As high as they can
(As high as they can)
And repeat after me

Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!
Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!
Freshmen! Freshmen!
Freshmen! Freshmen!

Do something' crazy! Do somethin' crazy!
Do something' crazy! Do somethin' crazy!
Keg stand! Keg stand!
Keg stand! Keg stand!

(That party last night)
Man, I love college
I love it!
(That party last night)
Alright everybody, I gotta head back to class for a little bit

That party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it
(I wish we taped)
(You know it's going down)
I danced my ass off and had this one girl completely naked
Drink my beer and smoke my weed but my good friends is all I need
(You're all invited, bring your friends)
Pass out at 3, wake up at 10, go out to eat then do it again
Man, I love college

Do I really have to graduate?
Or can I just stay here for the rest of my life?

RESPONSE TO HOW TO RUIN A GREAT DESIGN:

RESPONSE TO HOW TO RUIN A GREAT DESIGN:

“Bad design comes in many forms. Things that are unsafe. Things that don’t work properly, or are unnecessarily complicated. Things that are ethically or environmentally unsound. Crimes against design are different. They deprive us of the joy of great design, by wrecking or replacing it.”

I think it is interesting how something so little can really affect the overall look. For example, The D being larger in the Diverted cyclist sign. I think there is a place for every type of design. Street signs should be simple, uncomplicated and used as an aid to get the point across clearly. (Helvetica probably works best :) ) The news signs are based off of the old. And it is interesting how generally no-one is likely to care quite so much about the system as the people who conceived it. Or another problem the article brings up is when a company hires someone to redo a design, a lot of times they find the new design is so similar to the old and actually becomes inferior. Overall, there is a lot of desire to update what was, but most of the time it seems it is better that way.

price tag: jessie j ft b.o.b

[Verse 1: Jessie J]
Seems like everybody's got a price,
I wonder how they sleep at night.
When the tale comes first,
And the truth comes second,
Just stop, for a minute and
Smile

Why is everybody so serious!
Acting so damn mysterious
You got your shades on your eyes
And your heels so high
That you can't even have a good time.

[Pre-Chorus:]
Everybody look to their left (yeah)
Everybody look to their right (ha)
Can you feel that (yeah)
Well pay them with love tonight...

[Chorus:]
It's not about the money, money, money
We don't need your money, money, money
We just wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the Price Tag

Ain't about the (ha) Ka-Ching Ka-Ching.
Ain't about the (yeah) Ba-Bling Ba-Bling
Wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the Price Tag.

[Verse 2: Jessie J]
We need to take it back in time,
When music made us all UNITE!
And it wasn't low blows and video Hoes,
Am I the only one gettin... tired?

Why is everybody so obsessed?
Money can't buy us happiness
Can we all slow down and enjoy right now
Guarantee we'll be feelin
All right.

[Pre-Chorus:]
Everybody look to their left (yeah)
Everybody look to their right (ha)
Can you feel that (yeah)
Well pay them with love tonight...

[Chorus]

[Verse 3: B.o.B]
Yeah yeah
Well, keep the price tag
And take the cash back
Just give me six streams and a half stack
And you can keep the cars
Leave me the garage
And all I...
Yes all I need are keys and garage
And guess what, in 30 seconds I'm leaving to Mars
Yes we leaving across these undefeatable odds
It's like this man, you can't put a price on life
We do this for the love so we fight and sacrifice everynight
So we ain't gon stumble and fall never
Waiting to see, a sign of defeat uh uh
So we gon keep everyone moving there feet
So bring back the beat and everybody sing
It's not about...

[Chorus x2]

[Outro: Jessie J]
Yeah yeah
Oo-oooh
Forget about the price tag

Citizen Cope: Pablo Picasso

The woman that I love
Is forty feet tall
She's a movie star
She's all in the papers
And everywhere i go
People hand me quarters
And they pat me on the back
They treat me like im famous
I'll never leave her side
'Cause today can be dangerous
And when the night arrives
The light hit her features
And the cars drive by
Just so they could see her
And she never bats an eye
When someone takes her picture

Mr.Officer if you've come to take her
Then that means one of us
Gonna end up in a stretcher
Gonna end up in the papers, going end up in the papers, yeah

If i had a pistol
I'd brandish it and wave it
She's the only one alive that knows that I'm not crazy
She's gonna testify on my behalf
Down at the Navy
So I can get some peace
And provide for my babies
I got a stick and a bottle
I'll pretend I got a razor
Helicopters and cameras all shottin' for the station
They say that a wild man defending his lady
But for some odd reason they keep calling you a painting

one eskimo: simple day

let me tell you about a simple day
in my own way i woke up a 6 today
put on the coffee machine
i always dreamed of being a millionaire
without a care in the world because i'm loosing my hair

dressing up like a model in the shop window
even though i know i got it wrong and it don't go
you get to work to find that your boss in a mood
man what makes him think that he can be so rude

forgot to wash your face and your head aches too
people are staring as they pass you by ay ay
let it go don't show that you're a single man
and not a day goes by without a porno mag

god dam if i had only stayed at home today
i'll be fine to live the rest of my life this way

just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)
just a simple day (these times when everything's slow)
just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)
just a simple day (these times)

let me tell you about a simple day
in my own way fined for jaywalking
while i was talking to the traffic man
who's on commission man
he said thats what i do to put my kids through school

so my apologies, enjoy your day
who's he to say that when taking my money away

think man if i had only stayed at home today
i'll be fine to live the rest of my life this way

just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)
just a simple day (these times when everything's slow)
just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)
just a simple day (these times)

just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)
just a simple day (these times when everything's slow)
just a simple day (sometimes i don't know why we're living)

Words and Worlds

Words and Worlds:

This article begins with the events of 9/11. Obviously one of the most significant events in the past few decades in our American history, sparking questions on political issues and security. But what this articles focus on is the question, “How many events took place in New York on that morning in September?” It is argued there was one, but other argue that it was much more complex. There were two towers hit. Two different times. Another that the passengers brought down before it reached its target in Washington. Could possibly one of these towers have not been meant to be hit? The event can be qualified as one or two, dependent upon how we mentally describe it to ourselves.

How do we frame events? What point of view is it looked at? This article shows how one thing can be looked at in different ways to almost create something different to whomever is analyzing it. The author points to how the mind categorizes matter into discrete things, continuous stuff, and similar categories into discrete events and continuous activities.

The article goes on to explain how there are many conspiracy theories but where they differ is in the construal of those facts.. “how the intricate swirl of matter in space ought to be conceptualized by human minds.” but it is the casual link between the intention of a man and a change in an object that distinguished the understanding of 9/11 from the theories.

CONTINUING:

Semantics is about the relation of words to thought, but it is also about the relation of words to other human concerns.
A feature of the mind is that even our most abstract concepts are understood in terms of concrete scenarios.

These previous points lead to the idea of an event, three and a half billion dollars was given as an insurance payout to Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the World Trade Center. This is considered to have been the world’s most expensive debate in semantics. The money received was due to the definition of event.

Keeping with same theme but analyzing a different event the article goes on to speak of George Bush’s reason for war. Saddam’s supposedly assembling of nuclear weapons, framed for the viewers to believe exactly what he was saying. After finding out this was not true headlines claimed “Bush lied” but this is not necessarily the truth. His resources were pointing towards his first conclusion. So we don’t know.

“Learning: it entails the belief attributed to the subject’s truth.” You don’t necessarily “learn” the truth but if you’re being taught it doesn’t it seem like the truth originally? SO the important question with this is...”could semantics really be that consequential in political history?” (in dealing with Bush’s claim) I think yes, these fine point verbs led us into a war where people now believe our past president untruthfully led us in, but to me he wasn’t lying. Like the article states; words are tied to reality when their meanings depend, as factive verbs do, on a speaker’s commitments about the truth. The simple point...a lot of times the idea that meaning of the words, of the facts, are in the head.

In conclusions, the connectedness of words to real people and things is important to analyze not just the connection of words to information. This creates a complex analysis that can be taken to cases such as the world trade center or the real truth of a person’s identity.

Interesting article...

Christina Perri: Arms

I never thought that you would be the one to hold my heart
You came around and you knocked me off the ground from the start

You put your arms around me
and I believe that it's easier for you to let me go
You put your arms me and I'm home

How many times will let you me change my mind and turn around?
I can't decide if I'll let you save my life or if I'll drown

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let our love get so close
You put your arms around me and I'm home

The world is coming down on me and I can't find a reason to be loved
I never wanna leave you but I can't make you bleed if I'm alone

You put your arms around me
and I believe that it's easier for you to let me go...

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let our love get so close...

You put your arms around me and I'm home...

You put your arms around me and I'm home...

Citizen Cope D'Artagnan Theme

I've been sinning
I've been livin'
I've been beaten
By Saturdays
On a diamond
I lay on a diamond
On a diamond
I lay awake
D'Artagnan
Good ol' D'Artagnan
He ain't got a thing on me
I've been minding
To my field of timing
Too bad your time in
It just never came

Well I don't know how else to say it
In a different way
But why don't you just fade away
'Cause there's a battle going on
Down south of Babylon
So why don;t you just fade away

I've been dealing
I've been healing
I've been dealing
A crooked game
Thieving pirates

Barton Hollow: The Civil Wars

I'm a dead man walking here
But that's the least of all my fears
Ooh underneath the water

It's not Alabama clay
That gives my trembling hands away
Ooh Please forgive me father

Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e'er I go
Won't do me no good washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul

Did that full moon force my hand?
Or that un marked hundred grand?
Ooh underneath the water
Please forgive me father

Miles and miles in my bare feet
Still can't lay me down to sleep
If I die before I wake
I know the Lord my soul won't take

I'm a dead man walking
I'm a dead man walking

Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles

Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e'er I go
Won't do me no good washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul

Whats a boy to do: Mat Kearney

I'm sure that I'm moving to St Louis
Three long years wondering here in New York City
I guess I'm looking for the right way to do this
I guess I'm looking for the right things to call pretty
Young boys playing in the park turning their backs to take a shot
You know I'll stay sharp around here 'cause they're stoning and leaving type
It's the kind of love that comes and goes when there's company coming around

What's a boy to do who knows no man now?
What's a boy to do who knows no man now?

Daddy's been looking down his nose at all of them
And I've been looking round for someone to tell me who I am
He kept saying I was to young to finish a fight
I'd die each time they came I never got to draw my knife
Well it was just a pair of shoes in a middle school room with the world watching in
And angel is crying I'm dying just a little inside as they ran away
Funny which words stick around 20 years down when you're driving alone

What's a boy to do when there's no man at home?
What's a boy to do when there's no man at home?

Well I'll stack all my books in perfect rows
From the biggest down to the smallest ones
And I buy all the perfect clothes
Bullet proof and black, where I look like a son

Well it was just a rain night at his house
A bottle spinning around the room
And everybody's singing and slipping down the bottom halfway rush of blood
And I was grabbing Missy but I was trying to find the light switch in the dark

What's a boy to do with no man in his heart?
What's a boy to do with no man in his heart?

It's all quiet for the first time
With no voices left to fall
I saw a boy at the bottom of the bridge
His car was left there on the top
It's four o'clock in the morning
Didn't need to be like this
There's a white sheet left to cover up
What should have been a holy kiss
It's not like those days
It's not like I'm scared of you

What's the son of man and a boy to do?
What's the son of man and a boy to you?

Laura Jansen: Single Girls

I think you'd like my new hair
I cut it when you weren't there
That pieces of us everywhere
Were falling down

My bed is now a girl's bed
Pink flowers under my head
And pillows on your side instead
Of you

Cause that's what single girls do
Don't think about you

I'm reading books on meditation
Praying for my heart's salvation
I've got the motivation
To be a free girl now

I've gone drinking with the guy down the hall
Put up a new color on my bare walls
I'm so damn busy
After all
Cause that's what single girls do

Don't think about you

I keep trying
I keep trying
To make my way back to the light where I belong
But God keeps lying
God keeps lying
Saying this is for the best and nothing here is wrong

But I"m still thinking about you

I think you'd like my new hair
I cut it like I didn't care
That pieces of me everywhere
Were falling down

One more glass of wine
Before I turn off the lights
This time I'll be fine
I'll be fine
I'll be fine

Sara Haze: Colored on Me

Colored On Me

I am not responsible
for the shattered tapestry
everything was painted up on me

the shadow of a broken past
compromise my innocence
now I'm left with dots that don't connect

(Chorus)
so I try to drown my pride
with every tear I've cried
but it's been tattooed on me
and i try to wash my hands
of every expectation
thats been colored on me

i don't know what more i can do
i gave you everything i could
still you look at me like damaged goods

just let it go don't you complain
you're the reason i'm this way
i wish this thing could go away

(Chorus)
so I try to drown my pride
with every tear I've cried
but it's been tattooed on me
and i try to wash my hands
of every expectation
thats been colored on me
it's colored on me

break me, teach me, tattoo my skin
hold me, leave me, tattoo my skin

(Chorus)
I try to drown my pride
with every tear I've cried
but it's been tattooed on me
and i try to wash my hands
of every expectation
thats been colored on me

(Chorus)
so I try to drown my pride
with every tear I've cried
but it's been tattooed on me
and i try to wash my hands
of every expectation
thats been colored on me
i'ts colored on me

Hows this for quick?? :)

Less I gotta do later in the week :)

We only have to do two, right?...Hopefully!

So i began by reading the new york times article: “The Inside Story on Outsiderness.”

This articles talks about the new 22 ft sign that is being hung in the Whitney Museum of American Art saying “negro sunshine”. Designed by the artist Glenn Ligon who received his inspiration from a 1909 novel talking of a mixed-race women. It is a phrase used to speak of the history of African-Americans. But the article states how people are wondering if the phrase and how it is made up is meant to shock. Mr. Ligon was surprised by people thinking this, but it got a reaction which is what every artist wants. People state that his work “feels particularly timely because it comes at a moment when glaring polemics are no longer fashionable.”

I think it is interesting how words hold so much power, and harnessing that can create really striking art. I feel as if that is what is happening with this piece. The artist obviously had to be aware that people would double take on this phrase, like he said it is not language of this time. I love how it is stated that, not only in this piece but in his other works, he raises a controversial question and leaves the viewer to work for the answers. I enjoyed how this article put a focus on Mr Ligon’s appearance giving a face to the piece and helping the reader to understand his character. Sometimes this makes a piece even more interesting, when understanding the maker.

He has become a success, even having Obama choose one of his pieces.

His description of why he uses stencils is interesting as well....”it’s a way to be semi-mechanical, to make letters that are not handwriting but have personality.” I found his methods pretty interesting.

And on to the second article....

Welll after reading the first paragraph of this article ill let you know i will defiantly have an opinion. I hate swearing. Hate it, hate it, hate it and grew up with everyone around me hating it.

It initially brings up the very good point of why a swear word is a swear word. I’ve always wondered how we can say words that in other countries people would consider a swear word but because it does not have that connotation here in america it is alright to say and holds no effect, vice versa.

It is interesting the power we give words. But most interesting, how words can be changed due to their context. In the article they also talked about it in context of how it is said. Like is saying the f word not in the sexual content t or literally saying the s word to signify crap and not just in a frustrated manner. This brings up the question...is it then wrong? The FCC claimed that “even when the speaker does not intend a sexual meaning, a substantial part of the community...will understand the words as freighted with an offensive sexual connotation.” I actually agree with this, even though i know most people would not.

The sentence that stuck out the most was this; “that over time, taboo words relinquish their literal meaning and retain only a coloring of emotion, and then just an ability to arouse attention.” Agreed again. It isn’t so much the word but the impact that the word can reach that is important. Most of these words have lost their meaning, but they are understood to powerfully express an emotion. It really is an intense grey area when you think about it. Saying swear words to college students is a norm, but then why can’t it be said to 5 year olds? It isn’t so much the word but the connotation that it sticks with, the way it makes someone instantly portrayed. Our world is made up of so many things that instantly categorize you if you do (or say) them, which is slightly confusing. I feel swearing is wrong because it has such a bad connotation it portrays someone in a light wether that be negative or positive, but a lot of time it depends on the viewer. What truly is wrong? Is it what the public decides is wrong? It is what history states is wrong? Is it what the larger masses declares is wrong?...I’m just gonna stay away form this grey area :)

Across the Universe: Fiona Apple

[Written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney]
[Originally performed by The Beatles in the album "Let It Be"]

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind,
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru de va om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter, shades of earth are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
million suns and calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sara Bareillas: Basket Case

One, two, three, four...

I don't want to
Talk about it to you
I'm not an open book
That you can rifle through
Cold hard truth that you'll see right to

I'm just a basket case without you

He's not a magic man
Or a perfect fit
He had a steady hand and I got used to it
And a glass cage heart and invited me in

Now I'm just a basket case without him

Begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do

Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case

I don't say much and it'll stay that way
You gotta steel train touch and I'm just the track you lay
So I'll stay right here, underneath you

I'm just a basket case and it's what we do

You're begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do

Now I'm just a basket case

Won't someone come on in and tug at my seams
Or send your armies in
Robbers and thieves
To steal the state I'm in
I don't want it anymore

You're begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do

Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case

Perfect Two: Auburn

You can be the peanut butter to my jelly
You can be the butterflies I feel in my belly
You can be the captain
And I can be your first mate
You can be the chills that I feel on our first date
You can be the hero
And I can be your side kick
You can be the tear
That I cry if we ever split
You can be the rain from the cloud when it's stormin'
Or u can be the sun when it shines in the mornin'

Don't know if I could ever be
Without you 'cause boy you complete me
And in time I know that we'll both see
That we're all we need
Cause you're the apple to my pie
You're the straw to my berry
You're the smoke to my high
And you're the one I wanna marry

Cause you're the one for me (for me)
And I'm the one for you (for you)
You take the both of us (of us)
And we're the perfect two
We're the perfect two
We're the perfect two
Baby me and you
We're the perfect two
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/auburn/perfect_two.html ]
You can be the prince and I can be your princess
You can be the sweet tooth I can be the dentist
You can be the shoes and I can be the laces
You can be the heart that I spill on the pages
You can be the vodka and I can be the chaser
You can be the pencil and I can be the paper
You can be as cold as the winter weather
But I don't care as long as were together

Don't know if I could ever be
Without you 'cause boy you complete me
And in time I know that we'll both see
That we're all we need
Cause you're the apple to my pie
You're the straw to my berry
You're the smoke to my high
And you're the one I wanna marry

Cause your the one for me (for me)
And I'm the one for you (for you)
You take the both of us (of us)
And we're the perfect two
We're the perfect two
We're the perfect two
Baby me and you
We're the perfect two

You know that I'll never doubt ya
And you know that I think about ya
And you know I can't live without ya
I love the way that you smile
And maybe in just a while
I can see me walk down the aisle

Cause you're the apple to my pie
You're the straw to my berry
You're the smoke to my high
And you're the one I wanna marry
Hook
Cause your the one for me (for me)
And I'm the one for you (for u)
U take the both of us (of us)
And were the perfect two
Were the perfect two
Were the perfect two
Baby me and you
We're the perfect two(yeah, yeah)

Homework for this weeeekkkk

Milton Glaser on using design to make ideas new:

He was asked to do paintings to celebrate the life of Piero Della Francesca and this led him to a whole new way of thinking, comparing looking at these paintings as nature. A way of observation to analyze a piece and be able to look at it in a different way and take liberty to change something about them. I thought it was interesting the way he spoke of looking differently at the piece thinking of it in an entirely different way, recreating it without it fully losing its originally meaning but giving it slightly different context.

“I never understood the conflict between abstraction and naturalism...since all paintings are inherently abstract to begin with....there doesn't seem to be an argument there.”

He then went on to speak of how we read things and how we are persuaded by what we know, like the word “reliable” and what follows after. It got me thinking of what do we know as genuinely reliable and is someone going to convince us otherwise if we already believe something is unreliable? Posters deal with deciding what they say and how they say it to convince the viewer of their point.

He deals with the norms of posters and pushing those boundaries. A poster is not meant to be explained, but he says maybe that is not true. SO he went on to deal with simple posters but then giving a tiny explanation, revealing his thought process and therefore willingly exposing himself. He goes on to see if a poster really has to be square and rectangle and pushes that idea. And continues to what is art and making posters that reveal that accompanied by a literature in case the viewer doesn’t get it, which i think is great.

He actually is very interesting, funny and welcoming. He brought up many good points.

David Carson on design and discovery:

“Great design is a never-ending journey of discovery...”

“Im a big believer in the emotion of design and the message that is sent before someone begins to read....”

  • Design has gotten much simpler in recent years, getting to the point of being so simple that it is slightly turning back to how it was before.
  • Just because something legible doesn't mean it communicates the right thing, there are other factors that go into it.
  • I loved how his pieces and pieces he showed push the idea of text overlaying an image. I feel those sometimes are the most powerful.
  • He showed how big magazines deal with big issues, for example 911 in Time and People magazine and how they didn't deal with the space well and that gave a very negative impact. The images were so contrasting.
  • His found images were for the most part really compelling and his sense of humor is engaging. I actually really enjoyed this video.
  • The thing he said that stood out to me the most was, “You have to utilize who you are through your work....no one else can do that.” so true!
